Focus on: The 43rd International Children’s Art Exhibition “Children’s Pictures Open the World.”

1970年の大阪万国博覧会を機に開催された世界児童画展は、今年で43回目を迎えました。この間に起こった最も大きな社会の出来事は、交通・通信手段の発達により、コミュニケーションと物理的移動の様相が劇的に変化したことでしょう。

しかし、そのような進歩にも関わらず、世界は未だ混迷の渦中にあります。先進国の金融経済は、生産と消費という実態経済から遊離しており、貧困と食糧問題、民族問題と地域紛争、資源と環境問題などにも展望が見出せていません。

ここではおそらく、従来の成長戦略という政策により、世界のあり方を構想する方法そのものに限界が見えているようにも思えます。国家の「戦略」ではなく、人々の「合意」を形成する感性の基盤が求められている気がしてなりません。

ところで、子どもの表現には、それが万人の記憶であるという側面があります。これは、子どもたちは現に子どもであり、大人もかつては子どもであったという単純な事実に基づくものであり、それゆえ、人種、民族、性別を問わず、万人が共有できる感性のテーブルとなりえます。

同一性よりも差異に、一般性よりも個別的課題に目が向けられがちな今日の文化状況にあって、この平明さは、説得力を有し、人々の共感を呼び、感性的合意を形成する可能性を持っていると私たちは考えます。

私ども主催者は、この展覧会を43年にわたり開催してきたことに誇りと責任を感じています。けれどもそれに安住することなく、子どもたちの絵に、新しい時代感覚を見出したいと思っています。

The International Children’s Art Exhibition which started in 1970 at the World's Fair in Osaka reached it's 43rd anniversary this year. In the intervening years the biggest developments in society have come from the dramatic changes in communication and movement due to advances in transportation and communication technology.

However, not withstanding this progress, the world is still in a chaotic stage. The financialized economies of advanced nations-alienated from the actual economy of production and consumption-cannot have a perspective on poverty and hunger, ethnic strife and regional disputes, resources and the environment.　

Perhaps we may wonder if we are seeing the limits of our traditional strategies for growth as a means of envisioning the way the world ought to be.
We get the feeling that we want a basic sensibility that creates an understanding between people, not national strategy.Incidentally, there is an element of children's expression that belongs to everybody's memory. It is based on the simple fact that children are actually children and adults used to be children, and so everybody can share a common sensibility regardless of race, nationality or sex.

Especially in today's culture that tends to focus more on difference than sameness and individuality than universality. We believe that children’s expression has the power to persuade and arouse sympathy in people, and holds the potential to create sensitive understanding.We sponsors of this event feel pride and responsibility for this exhibition that has continued the last 43 years. Yet we will not be complacent. We will continue to look for a new sense of our times in the pictures of children.
